Activity 1: English dictionary I(Warming up)
Ⅰ Aims
・To have the students understand the meaning of sentences that include subjective relative pronouns.
・To make the students accustomed to using sentences with relative pronouns in order to define something in English.
Ⅱ Contents
・Part 1: Listen and Understand 5 min.
・Part 2: Write 10 min.
Ⅲ Materials
・Handout(B5, 1 sheet)
Ⅳ Procedure
Part 1: Listen and Understand
1. JTE and ALT give the handout to the students.
2. JTE and/or ALT explain what to do.
(1) This is a listening exercise, so listen to Monica/me carefully and write down the answers.
(2) Monica/I will become someone or something and will explain to you what I am. Listen to her/my explanation carefully and write down what I am in just one word.
(3) Let's do a sample exercise.
ALT: I am a woman who takes care of sick or injured people in the hospital.(×2)
JTE: What's the answer?
Students: "nurse."
(4) Please remember the following.
・You can listen to the explanation twice.
・When you get the answer, write it down on the worksheet.
・DO NOT take notes, just listen to it carefully.
・DO NOT talk with your classmates or tell the answer.
3. JTE and ALT carry out the activity.(Read twice for each)
1. I am a person who studies at school. (student)
2. I am a person who cuts men's hair and shave their face. (barber)
3. I am a person who grows vegetables and animals for food. (farmer)
4. I am a thing which carries a lot of people along(through?) the road. (bus)
5. I am a thing which goes around the sun. (planet)
6. I am a thing which does a lot of things fast and automatically. (computer)
4. JTE and ALT check the answers and give them the points (1 point for each).
Part 2: Writing
1. JTE and/or ALT explain what to do.
(1) This is a writing exercise. So please write as correctly as possible.
(2) You now have six words that have just been defined by me. Do you remember how they have been defined? Please write the sentences that define these words just as I defined. You cannot use your
own words.
2. JTE and ALT have the students write down the sentences.(5 min.)
3. JTE and ALT check the answers and give them points(1 point for each).
4. JTE and ALT have the students count the total scores of the two exercises and have them report the scores to find out the champion.
Activity 2: English dictionary II(Challenge)
Ⅰ Aims
・To have the students make up sentences with subjective and objective relative pronouns in order to define something in English.
Ⅱ Contents
・Think and Speak(Group work of 4 or 5 students: 10 groups) 20 min.
Ⅲ Materials
・Word Cards(10 sets)
・Handout(score sheet, the same one used in Activity 1)
Ⅳ Procedure
1. JTE and/or ALT explain what to do.
(1) This is a speaking exercise. So please think well and speak.
(2) You are divided into groups of 4 or 5 people.
(3) Each group has a set of cards that show the words you will work on. Please put the cards with the backside up.
(4) Turn over each card and make up a definition sentence of the word.
(5) When you make definition sentences, you have to use relative pronouns.
(6) You can use subjective pronouns and objective pronouns.
(7) If you see the word and you think you can define the word, please raise your hand say, "I got it!" If you are the first one, then you have the right to give the answer.
(8) If all of your teammates say, "It's OK," then you get a point and the team goes to the next word. If they say, "It's not good," you cannot get a point and another person will try.
2. JTE and ALT demonstrate an example with both subjective and objective
pronouns.
・This is a person who controls airplanes.(pilot)
・This is thing which/that you use when you write on your notebook.(pencil)
3. JTE and ALT have the students work on the activity and look around.(10 min.)
4. If time left, JTE and ALT pick up some words and let someone who defined the words try to tell his/her answers to the classmates.
