Activity 1: Monica Master Quiz Show

 

1. Aims
 This is a warm-up activity to give the students a chance to know ALT better as well as to give them exercises to know the usage of adverbs through a game.

2. Procedures
(1) JTE and ALT give the students the worksheet.
(2) JTE and/or ALT explain what the activity would be.
 This is a game(or gamble). You will bet some money using the following table.
 The rules of the game are as follows:
 ① You look at the key words in the table and guess if ALT will answer "Yes" or "No" to the questions which should be made of the words.
 ② You have $20 now. You will bet some money on the questions in the table. You can bet $1 ~$5 on each question.
 ③ You ask the questions listed or the ones made by yourselves and listen to ALT, who will answer "Yes" or "No" to the questions, and write down the answers.
 ④ You get or lose your money. It depends on whether your guess turns out to be right or wrong.
 ・You will get the money back and get the same amount of money more if the guess is right.
 ・You will lose the money if the guess is wrong.
 ・You will get the money back and get the double amount of money more if you ask the questions and the guess is right.
 ・You will get $1 back even if you ask the question but the guess is wrong.

Activity 2: Rules or Manners

1. Aim
 This is a group activity which gives the students chances to make up and use sentences including adverbs, such as "can/can't, must/mustn't, should/shouldn't, may/may not, have to/don't have to.

2. Procedure
(1) JTE and ALT give the students the worksheet.
(2) ALT and/or JTE explains what the activity is going to be like.
 ① You are put into groups of four or five people.
  *The maximum number of groups is twelve.
 ② You have nine cards which tell you what you are supposed to work on. For example, sports, such as baseball, volleyball and so on.
 ③ If you pick up one, for example, baseball, then you and your team members have to think of the rules of the field and tell the rules in English.
 ④ If you say a sentence which tells one of the rules of the field and which includes a certain adverb, then you can get one point.
 ⑤ You have a manager in your group. The manager can choose the topic. The manager changes at every topic.
 ⑥ The manager can get double scores every time he/she makes a sentence
 ⑦ The time spent for each topic will be the same. 3 minutes may be appropriate.
(3) JTE announces them to start the game and manages the time.
(4) ALT goes in a group and stay there in each topic or just goes around every group, and advises the students if any help is needed.
  JTE may do the same as ALT.
(5) JTE announces them to stop talking on the topic and tell them to go to the next topic.
(6) When all finished, JTE asks who is the champion of each group and praise them.
