Activity 1: When did it strike?

1 Type
 Individual
 Listening

2 Aim
This is a warm-up activity to make students used to catch information with sentences of past perfect tense. The students listen to ALT, who talks about what she did one night where a big earthquake struck, and find out when it happened along with reading the time table given.

3 Procedure
(1) JTE and ALT give the worksheet of the table.
(2) JTE explains what the students are expected to do.
① You will listen to ALT and find out one thing from what she tells you.
② You will get that information from the table while you listen to her.
(3) ALT explains the situation of what she is going to talk about.
One day, a big earthquake struck my town. The table you have shows what I did that night from 6 p.m. to 9:30. The earthquake struck some time in this period, but I will not tell you the time. Then I will tell you what I did; something before the earthquake, something after the earthquake. So please listen to me very carefully and find out the time zone when the earthquake struck.
(4) ALT starts to talk about what she did.
When the earthquake struck, I hadn't written the letter yet. But fortunately I had eaten supper by that time. I had also turned off the TV. I had been listening to the radio when it struck us suddenly. In fact I had been waiting for Jill to visit us that evening. I was lucky because I had already finished one of the assignments when it struck and was working on another one. That night I planned reading the novel, but I did it long after the earthquake.
(5) The students listen to ALT carefully and check the possible time zone when the earthquake struck.
(6) JTE and ALT ask the students if they got the right answer.

Activity 2: A Love Story

1 Type
 Individual
 Speaking

2 Aim
This is a speaking exercise to make students used to describing a certain situation given in picture using some simple sentences of past perfect tense. The students are expected to describe the situation they see in the picture. And this is a kind of pre-exercise for the next activity.

3 Procedure
(1) JTE puts the pictures of sample exercise(1A&1B).
(2) JTE and ALT explain what the students are expected to do using a sample exercise. They may want to have the students try to answer.
① You will look at the picture of 1B and understand the situation.
This is Haruo. Yesterday he was in a bad mood.
How does he look? → He looks sad/depressed. He's crying. etc.
② You will look at 1A and you will describe what had happened before that.
Why did he look so? What had happened to him?
→ He had lost his love. His girl friend had left him. His girl friend had made another boy friend. etc.
   * JTE and ALT encourage the students to answer in as many ways as possible.
   * ALT may point out some important(crucial) points of using the sentences of past perfect tense.
(3) JTE and ALT put other pictures on the board and had the same exercises.

*Remarks:
The teachers may decide to use only 1A and 1B because they may find out that the students understand the situation created with the tense of past perfect. The teacher can use the other pictures just to see if the students need other examples to understand the usage of the target grammatical point.
